Rights of chronic renal failure patients undergoing chronic dialysis therapy Vittorio E. Andreucci1, David N. S. Kerr2 and Joel D. Kopple3 - 1Department of Nephrology, School of Medicine, University Federico II of Naples, Italy, 2National Kidney Research Fund London, UK and 3Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, David Geffen School of Medicine & School of Public Health, UCLA Los Angeles CA USA Correspondence: Vittorio Andreucci MD, Via Giacomo Puccini 18, I-80127 Napoli Italy veandreucci@hotmail.com
Our IFKF Patient Advocacy Committee developed a set of rights for individuals with end stage renal failure (ESRF). These rights have been approved by the IFKF Board of Directors. Twenty rights have been developed, in the following categories: (i) need of treatment and choice of patients; (ii) treatment of ESRF by haemodialysis; (iii) treatment of ESRF by peritoneal dialysis; and (iv) renal transplantation. It is hoped this document will provide a stimulus to more scientific inquiry and discussion as to what rights patients possess with regard to treatment of CKD, regardless of where they live or what may be their economic, social, ethnic or political status.
