Newsletter from IFKF Project Director - Jan Lantink

The 9th IFKF International Meeting held in Mainz in May 2008 was a great start for me as newly appointed Project Director. I met a lot of people from IFKF and was very impressed by the numerous efforts that members undertake to help patients with kidney disease and to prevent that people develop kidney disease. The prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease is one of the highest priorities around the globe for IFKF.

Getting projects started and on the go are of course my most important goal. Projects that help you to achieve your mission, to help you grow and professionalize. Projects can only be realised when funding is assured. From corporate partners and individuals individuals, who want to support IFKF in a structural way or from sponsors for specific projects.   Read more here>

National Kidney Foundation of Sri Lanka

We have managed to get 12 dialysis machines from committed donors and are going to start operation next month. See photo A'Pura Clinic in action. A special water treatment plant from Germany is also being installed.

Thousands need dialysis in this area.  The photo shows the Renal Care & Renal Research Centre in the North Central Province, that the NKF started, which is nearing completion. Although much funding is still required it is work in progress.

News from National Kidney Foundation of South Africa

We are working hard on the Nth West Province project concerning education and awareness of kidney disease, leading to a two day symposium in October, 2008. The first day will involve informing and testing 2000 of the rural population for renal disease. On the second day the NKF and nephrologists will educate general practitioners of NWP; traditional healers have also agreed to be included.

We have been seeking much needed funding and managed to get a little from Nth Western Province Government. Tony Meyers together with staff from Klerksdorp Hospital have been to visit the rural population to inform them of the October function. We hope this will be done in the eight other provinces in Sth Africa and feature AIDS testing and counseling on the first day of the symposium.  Alwyn Smith nkfsa@mweb.co.za or see website www.nkf.co.za

Kidney Wales Foundation -  News from Wales UK

We started 2008 well with £60,000 arriving from benefactors and the following great news which makes us even happier. The Welsh Assembly Government announced a new dedicated Transplant Unit in Cardiff on 21 December 2007 following our successful People Like Us Campaign led by Allison John. The capital cost for the development is £4.27 million. See our campaign history www.pluscampaign.blogspot.com

  • Phase 1 - proposes a 4 bed ward, created in accommodation not currently utilised on the Cardiff UHW site, to provide capacity for haemodialysis patients currently accommodated on Ward B5. This would then create additional transplant and renal surgery capacity and would allow for up to 115 transplants per year. These beds could be available by March/April 2008. The revenue cost for this is £2.41 million.
  • Phase 2 - during the period 2010/2012 the Trust would undertake up to 140 transplants per year and would require 16 beds and the revenue cost would be £4.40 million.
  • Phase 3 - would require the full 21 beds to be available by 2012 and would allow for up to 160 transplants per year at a revenue cost of £5.85 million.
